When is dental software a medical device in Canada?
The intended function matters more than whether a product is called a platform.
The classification question
Health Canada’s guidance ties medical-device status to software functionality and its intended or represented use. The word “platform” does not decide the outcome. Administrative coordination and software used for a medical purpose must be assessed according to what they do.

Our product interpretation
Describe each function separately: storing a file, routing a request, interpreting an image, recommending a plan or producing a patient-specific design. Record the user, input, output and decision the function supports. A single product name can conceal very different responsibilities.
What to prepare
A clear intended-use statement is more useful than an early assumption about class. Compare the statement with the actual screen behaviour and marketing copy. If a later release adds clinical analysis, revisit the assessment before representing it as available for care. Professional review is part of a workflow; it should not be treated as an automatic exemption from product requirements.
A closer look
| Focus | What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coordination | Routes information and records actions. | Describe the actual administrative purpose. |
| Analysis | Interprets information for a medical purpose. | Assess the intended use and relevant device rules. |
| Later feature | Adds a new output or decision influence. | Revisit the assessment before release. |
Frequently asked questions
Is every dental platform a medical device?
No. The assessment depends on the functions and intended or represented use.
Does a dentist reviewing the output settle the classification?
No. Review alone does not resolve the function-by-function assessment.
