BC oral health standards: a starting point for digital teams

Connect the regulator’s professional standards to the responsibilities a digital service must respect.

Start with the regulator

BCCOHP’s Standards for the Oral Health Team set minimum conduct and competence requirements for oral health professionals in British Columbia. Use them to frame practice responsibilities and workflow requirements.

Turn responsibilities into questions

When a new service enters a practice, identify who provides care, who communicates with the patient and who holds the relevant record. A digital supplier should be able to describe its part in that arrangement without suggesting that software takes over a professional obligation.

Our interpretation

A useful procurement meeting follows a real task: the clinician reviews information, asks for a change and records a decision. Ask where each action is retained and how another authorized team member understands it later. Then compare the proposed process with the practice’s professional requirements. The goal is a workable relationship between people and systems, rather than a compliance badge based only on a feature list.
