How to read a dental technology claim without the hype
A short framework for comparing vendor announcements, professional guidance and measured results.
Identify the kind of source
A manufacturer announcement can establish what the company says it offers. Professional guidance can frame a practice question. A study can report results under a defined method. These sources have different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Our reading method
Write the claim in one sentence, then ask what observation would support it. “Exports a report” can be demonstrated directly. “Improves clinical outcomes” requires a different level of evidence. “Saves time” needs a defined task, comparator and timing method.
Carry the distinction into buying
Ask for the version and configuration behind the claim. Record unanswered questions as evaluation topics rather than fill them with assumptions. A supplier willing to explain its methods and limits gives a team a more usable basis for assessment. This approach makes a comparison sharper without pretending that every procurement decision needs the same type of study.
A closer look
| Focus | What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Feature claim | The product performs an action. | Request a demonstration. |
| Performance claim | The action meets a measured standard. | Request the method and results. |
| Outcome claim | The product changes a real-world result. | Review the relevant study and comparator. |
Frequently asked questions
Are vendor statements unusable?
No. They are useful descriptions to verify, but they are not independent performance evidence.
What makes a time-saving claim meaningful?
A defined task, comparable baseline, measurement method and relevant user setting.
