Dental innovation: distinguish a research result from a product

Why a paper, a demonstration and a supported commercial service answer different questions.

The industry context

Professional discussions of AI cover research, education and healthcare. A promising research direction can be valuable without being a product that a clinic can immediately use.

Our assessment framework

A research result describes a method and its evaluation. A demonstration shows selected behaviour. A service must also address users, support, privacy, deployment and the responsibilities around its outputs. Ask which of these the supplier is presenting and which have actually been tested.

A more useful development conversation

Instead of dismissing an early prototype or overstating it, identify what it proves today and the next experiment required. A working record flow may support a usability session. A new image-analysis function may require a separate technical and clinical evaluation. This sequence helps a practice participate constructively while avoiding a purchase decision based on a future feature described in the present tense.

Frequently asked questions

Is a published method the same as an available service?

No. Implementation, support, operating arrangements and applicable authorization are separate questions.

Can an early prototype still be useful?

Yes. It can help test defined workflow questions when its purpose and scope are clear.
