Dental AI: questions to ask before accepting an accuracy claim
Look beyond a headline percentage to the dataset, task and clinical use being evaluated.
An industry reference
ADA Technical Report 1109, published in 2025, addresses evaluation of dental image-analysis systems using augmented or artificial intelligence. Its subject is a useful reminder that a model score needs an evaluation method behind it.
Our evaluation framework
Ask what the system detects, what counts as a correct result and how the reference labels were established. Identify whether testing was independent of development data and whether it reflects the images and users in the proposed setting. A percentage without a denominator or task definition is difficult to interpret.
Compare the consequences
Evaluate false alerts, missed findings and unreliable-output states. Assess workflow usability, model performance and clinical benefit with measures suited to each question.
A closer look
| Focus | What to look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dataset | Images used in evaluation. | Check independence and relevance to the proposed setting. |
| Reference | Basis for the expected answer. | Ask how labels were established and reviewed. |
| Errors | Missed findings and false alerts. | Discuss their effect on the intended task. |
